The Very Special Christmas Gift

It is the day before Christmas nineteen forty-nine. A young mother had just discovered that her five-year-old daughter had wasted an entire roll of rather expensive gold wrapping paper. Her daughter had crudely wrapped the paper around a small cardboard box that she had placed behind the family’s modest little Christmas tree. Money was very tight at the time and that made the mater seem even worse.
The mother called the little girl into the room and began to scold her for having wasted the paper on the box. The little girl entered the room and began slowly approaching her mother who was standing there holding the small crudely wrapped box. Her mother began her verbal reprimand as she watched her daughter run to her. As the mother continued with her scolding the little girl quickly approached and placed her tiny hands on the box her mother was holding. Then the little girl tenderly said, "This is for you, Mommy!"
The mother’s anger was quickly defused, and the matter was dropped as the box was placed back beneath the Christmas tree.
However, on Christmas Day the mother’s anger flared again when she opened the box and found it was empty. She again spoke to her daughter in a harsh manner saying, "Don't you know, young lady, when you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside the package?”
The little girl had tears in her eyes as she looked upwards at her mother. Then the little girl said, "Oh, Mommy, it's not empty! I blew kisses into it until it was full."
The mother was crushed. She fell on her knees and put her arms around her little girl, and she begged her daughter’s forgiveness for her outburst of anger and for her thoughtlessness.
Shortly after the new year an accident took the life of that little girl.
Sometime later, during the painful process of attending to the little girls personal items the mother rediscovered the small golden box safely tucked it away safely under the child’s bed. Her daughter had obviously placed it there shortly after the mother’s tearful apology on Christmas Day. The mother gently lifted the small box from under the bed and placed it against her breast.
Once again a flood of tears began to run down her face. Then she suddenly recognized a feeling of deep comfort had come over her. As she knelt there holding that small crudely wrapped golden box she again heard the same precious words that her daughter had spoken to her that day. "This is for you, Mommy!"
As she once again opened the empty box she heard her daughter’s softly spoken words, "Oh, Mommy, it's not empty! I blew kisses into it until it was full."
A soft smile came across the mother’s face as she recalled words she had often read to her daughter from the family Bible. “And I will wipe away all your tears—–and there will be no more sorrow.” It now seemed as though her beautiful daughter was actually saying those very same words to her. The mother instantly knew she was holding the most precious gift she had ever gotten from her daughter. The gift of eternal love.
The mother was said to have kept that crudely wrapped golden box beside her own bed—for all the years of her life. Whenever discouraged or faced with difficult problems she would place the box against her breast, open it and take out an imaginary kiss. She would then find herself warmly reminded of the love of the beautiful child who had once filled that box with all those wonderful kisses. Each of us, as human beings, have been given, in a very real sense, exactly the same gift as the one given by the little girl, and it too is also filled with unconditional love. That same gift comes from God, our family, our children, and our friends. Today, let us each remember; There is no possession anyone could hold that is more precious than the "gift" of the LOVE OF GOD. It is that gift from God which allows us the power and ability to,LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
