Memories of a lost life

© Mads  "Remember your first schoolday?" I asked my son, smiling.

"Actually, I can't remember much of first or second grade... But I do remember the first day of third grade, when you and cousin Jenny came with me" He answered, smiling as he though back at it.

"Yeah, you were only eight years old, and Jenny was eighteen" I said.

"How is Jenny?" My son asked me, he hadn't seen her in a long time.

"She's fine" I said, "She got a job as a nurse".

He smiled just thinking about it.
He loved his cousins, all of them.

"She could not have chosen a more suitable occupation" He said, liking the thought.

For a second, we just sat there.
He looked at me, and I looked at him.
It had been a long time since we just talked liked this.
I enjoyed it.

I was sitting in a chair, and he was sitting in the couch, as he always did.
He had alot of habits like that, but I found it charming, and characteristic.
I just wanted to tell him that I loved him, but I had never been a man for words like that.
The only person I usually told that I loved, was his mother, my wife.

"So, soon eighteen" I said, smiling.
Time had passed so quickly.
It seemed as only yesterday when his mother went into labor.

"Yep, and you know that you're gonna have to buy me a car then" He joked, laughing.
Laughing back, I told him that it was not going to happen.

"Speaking about cars" I said, suddenly remembering.
"Do you remember anything about the accident?" I asked.

"Mostly just what I've been told" He answered, thinking back.
"I remember crossing the street, and I remember that a car honked... and then it all went black. The next thing I remember is waking up at the hospital. You were sitting there by my side when I awoke, I think mom was out in the hallway, getting coffee"

"Yeah" I said and nodded.
"She hates herself for not being there when you awoke" I told him.

"Please, tell her not to" He said, a tear appearing in his eye.

"It was just for a second or two" I said, "before you closed your eyes again"

Suddenly, Sarah walked into the room.

"Who were you talking to?" She asked, taking my hand.

"No-one" I said, smiling at her.

"Well, it's dinner time, crazy" She said, and winked at me.

Before I left the room, I looked over at the couch.
It still had marks from where he used to sit.
