I Miss...

"What do you miss?"

It was a simple question, asked on a forum board, yet, it brought tears to my eyes. I miss my pre-9/11 innocence. I miss the last moments of time, that morning, before I knew planes had crashed into our hearts. The naiveté I can do without, but the slaughter of innocence has scarred my mind, and my soul.

I also miss Time. Adulthood, children, responsibilities, aging; all consume time, physically and mentally.

I miss fireflies, playing statues and kick-the-can, penny candy and lilacs. I miss lazy days of reading, walking on stilts, doing cartwheels and jumping rope. I miss fireplaces and blizzards.

I miss marveling at the Amish driving in buggies in the winter, carving snow bowls after the plow cleared the chunks to the side and the flashing cold of outdoor ice-skating.

I miss the 70's, earth shoes, patched-ass bell-bottoms and the sound clogs make, buying Mexican pot with lunch money, corncob pipes and clackers that beat up your wrists. I miss the rock bands from that time, and kissing Elvis’ poster.

I miss my carefree twenties in Colorado's 80's, using my tips from waiting tables to drink at the bar with friends, taking off to the mountains on a whim and the feel of a future expanding and endless.

I miss my family in Wisconsin, the cats I've lost, my vitality, my childhood dreams and hunting wild strawberries...

I miss it all. My youth, my past. Now, I miss my hair, my muscles, my butt and life before children. I miss my mother, and my dead father.
