I Love You More

(by Kevan Henshaw) Mike's eyes snapped open. They focused to the dim light in his best friend's apartment. Trying to get up, he collapsed back down due to an unbearably sharp pain in his forehead. Ugh, he hated hangovers.

Suddenly, he heard a soft sound, wailing coming from the other side of the room; his friend was in tears. This wasn't completely uncommon; Matt normally broke down, but this morning was different. Mike didn't know whether it was the way he was positioned, or the huge spaces between his sobs, but clearly, something was very wrong.

"Matt, what's up?" asked Mike sympathetically, while pushing himself up from the floor. He approached the figure who was sitting on the floor, staring at the yellowing stove.

No response.

Matt walked a little closer, pain still shooting through his forehead. He placed his left hand on his friend's shoulder. "What's wrong?"

Finally Mike opened his mouth. He didn't say anything though, and quickly closed it again. Then, he turned and stared Matt right in the eye. "I hate life," he said.

"Me too buddy," Matt replied laughing a little. His amusement didn't work on his roomate though, and soon Mike was looking away and crying once more.

"I want you to kill me."

Wow, Mike was completely serious. His voice hadn't broke once as he said that terrifying line. "Wh-why?" asked Matt, suddenly unaware of his hangover.

The figure on the floor just continued to sit, staring ahead. He stopped crying, but didn't answer the questions. Minutes passed, yet the friends stayed in their exact same poitions. Finally Mike stood up and turned around. He pressed his lips against his Matt as the friend stayed frozen, wondering strangely what was happening. When they broke apart, Mike looked at him and said, "That's why."

Matt was stunned. Mike had always liked him? All those times he'd got his hopes up and didn't mean to. All those times he'd made gay jokes, though he really wasn't homophobic at all. He'd said them just to brighten his friend up at the worst of times. They'd all backfired.

"There's a gun in my nightstand drawer. If you don't kill me, I'll kill me. I don't want to live with the long term pain anymore. I'd rather suffer it all at once. Please Matt, do this for me."

What am I doing? He thought, as his legs carried him towards the small, wooden nightstand. He opened the drawer and found the gun, sitting beside a pair of sunglasses. Slowly, he made his way back to his friend, who seemed... happy that Matt was doing this.

Matt raised the gun, pointing it straight ahead. He had a secret too; one that he'd never shared with the world either. He looked straight into his Mike's soul and said the first thing that rolled off his tongue, "I always loved you Mike." And then he turned the gun on himself and pulled the trigger.1
Mike stood in a daze for a couple minutes. He stared at his lover, lying on the ground. Blood seeped out of his head, but it wasn't like he noticed. Mike Slowly bent over the dead body and kissed it once more. "I love you more," he said, and then shot himself.2
