(by suppressiveangel) Softball State Championships. Three small little words, but they encompass so much. Kayla was at home plate trying to get a home run with a score of the other team in the lead of 7 to 6. The bases were loaded and it was all up to her now. She hit the ball and it went flying past the fence. For a 5’7” brunette, she could run pretty fast…especially with her long legs. She was stealing second and as she went for third she saw Steph winking at her and she tripped at third base. She got up quickly and made the winning run with a score of 7 to 10. Carlie was watching from the stands. She wasn’t just witnessing the steamy atmosphere, but she was also emanating her own. The game was over and Kayla walked over to Carlie. She was 5’2” and the extreme jealous type. She wasn’t about to let Kayla’s ‘slip of the foot’ pass her by.

“Hey baby” Kayla tried to wrap around Carlie’s neck and into her black hair, but she pushed her away, making the kiss nonexistent.

“Don’t ‘hey baby’ me. What the hell was that out there?”

“What are you talking about?” Kayla tried to pout her lips, look cute, and soften Carlie up like she usually does, but it didn’t work.

“I’m talking about your trip at third base. What? You didn’t have the balls to take Steph home? Oh wait…that’s right. You don’t have any balls.”

“What is wrong with you? I just tripped. What’s your deal? Don’t say that it’s because of Steph. She winked at me because we made a deal earlier that if my team won State, then she would have to pay for a date for you and I next Friday. If I lost, I would have to pay for the date between her and Jack.” Carlie stood there, stunned and speechless.

“Are you going to say anything Carlie? Cat got your tongue?” Ben was standing about three feet away and had been Carlie’s best friend since before the stone wheel had been invented. He picked up the stress signals and took the both of them to Kayla’s house to settle the matter elsewhere. It was an awkward ride. Carlie felt bad, but the real issue was still on her mind. They said good-bye to Ben, went up the stairs, and sat on Kayla’s bed.

“I apologize if I got mad at you earlier. I’m really sorry Kayla.”

“You’re sorry? That’s nothing new. Why won’t you say what’s really on your mind?”

“You’re pathetic. I was trying to apologize and you throw it back in my face, like it doesn’t even matter.”

“Maybe it doesn’t”

“I’m not the one with the problem here.”

“Oh, so I have the problem? What is my problem exactly?”

“YOUR MOTHER KAYLA! When we walked in the door, your mom asked why you didn’t kiss Ben good-bye. Why didn’t you?”

“Because I’m dating you! Look, I know it’s hard. But the cover-up with Ben is necessary.”

“Why is it necessary?”

“BECAUSE I LOVE YOU! If I told my mother about us, she would freak and send me off to boarding school and I’d never get to see you again. I don’t want that.”

“Did you ever think to ask me about what I want?” Kayla thought for a minute. She never did ask Carlie what she wanted out of the “secret” relationship. Perhaps it was time she considered Carlie’s opinion on the matter.

“What do you want?”

“I want to be with you out in the open. I hate this relationship and it’s killing what we had, Kayla.”

Kayla’s eyes started tearing and she turned to face the wall. In a low, tear-strained voice, “What do you mean ‘what we had’? Are we over?” Carlie came up behind her and put her arms around her waist. “DON’T f**king do that! How can you say something like that and try to be comforting? What the hell Carlie! Make up your mind!”

“Perhaps we are over.” Tears were caught in Kayla’s throat and she didn’t know what to say. They had been together for 18 months now. This topic had been brought up, but she usually just brushed it away for another time. She didn’t know the affect it had on Carlie.

Trying not to cry, “Is there any way to fix it?”

“You can tell your mom.” Kayla thought on that for a moment and turned to face her. She stopped breathing when she saw Kayla’s tears. She was absolutely beautiful when she cried. She usually loved it, but not when she was the source of her cries. She gulped down her dislike and gave the ‘cold’ face; hoping that she and Kayla would pull through.

Barely a whisper, “Okay, I’ll tell her. Remember that I love you…” She headed down stairs and sat on the couch with her mother while Kayla listened from upstairs. “Mom…I have to tell you something and you’re not going to like it.” Feeling concerned for her daughter, “What is it honey? What’s wrong? Why are you crying? Did you and Carlie have a fight?” She started sobbing and Mrs. Adams pulled her into her arms, rocking her back and forth.

“I’m a lesbian. I’ve been dating Carlie for 18 months.” Mrs. Adams froze. She was filled with so much anger. She had experimented with being bisexual when she was young and she had been put down and ridiculed all of her high school life. She didn’t want Kayla to go through that. Now that she knew about Kayla’s situation, it was a whole different story. She didn’t want to protect Kayla from everyone; she wanted to protect her from herself.

She slammed her head against the table. Kayla screamed and tried to get away from her mother, while Carlie stood motionless upstairs, wondering what she should do. Mrs. Adams grabbed Kayla and slammed her against the wall.

“Have you slept with her yet? Are you white trash just like everyone else?”

“Mom…please stop. You’re hurting me…” She sobbed louder, wishing that this could be over with. Mrs. Adams punched her hard in the stomach and she keeled over with agony.

“It’s a good thing she’s a girl; otherwise I’d have to worry about whether or not I just killed your baby.” Carlie appeared behind Mrs. Adams and punched her in the jaw, sending her crashing to the ground. She tasted blood in her mouth and tried to get up off the floor, but Carlie kicked her in her ribs, leaving her gasping in pain.

“How does it feel to be beaten up? Does it feel nice? Don’t you ever touch my girl again, or I swear; I will take further action next time and you won’t be around to go to your own funeral.” Carlie spit on her and went over to Kayla.

Trying to help her up, “Don’t touch me! I’m not worth being touched.” Sobbing uncontrollably, “I’m not good enough for anyone…” Carlie picked Kayla up and took her to her room as she tried to muffle her cries. She set her down on the bed, locked the door, and went to call Ben. She told him everything that had happened and he would try and be here as soon as possible. He lived about 30 minutes away, but he would always be there for the two of them no matter what. He said that he would try and be there soon. She thanked him and laid down next to Kayla, brushing her locks of hair to the side.

She quieted and looked at Carlie and she came in for a kiss. She kissed her gently and moved closer, letting Kayla know that she was there for her. Kayla kissed her back and turned in her arms, wishing she would be with Carlie always and forever. Carlie kissed her neck as she dozed off to sleep, glad that the news was out, but prepared for many more disasters to come.
