A Song In Silence

Her eyes were glued to the Pastor’s mouth. She was grateful that her parents had made sure she learned to lip read. It was always such a hassle trying to find someone who knew sign language, to sign what someone else was saying.

Jenna hadn’t been born death, but she had been so long since she had lost her hearing, that she didn’t remember what it was like to here. An illness when she was one had nearly taken her life, and had taken her hearing.

" Do you ever wonder if your life would be different if you hadn’t lost your hearing? " Jenna’s best friend Mariah asked her often.

" Of course I wonder. " Jenna responded, all the while wondering what her voice sounded like.

Jenna felt self conscious about the way she spoke, even though she was deaf, because she was deaf, she knew that she didn’t sound normal, Mariah never acted as if she noticed by Mariah had been her friend most of her life, and well the way Jenna talked just didn’t matter in their friendship.

I need to pay less attention to what the world thinks Lord, and start paying more attention to you. I can not afford to keep letting my mind wander away from the things of you. I refuse to let my disability an excuse to do just that.

Jenna had been a little girl of eight when she had given her heart to the Lord. She had not heard the words as they gave the altar call, but she had read the preachers lips and knew that she wanted more than anything to live a life that would please God, she wanted to have Jesus in her heart.

Someday I am going to be standing in front of that pulpit, preaching to a congregation. Jenna thought, as she read the preacher’s life. I will not let the fact that I am deaf stop me.

Jenna would be going away to college in the fall, some college where she could receive a degree in theology, and then become an ordained minister. It didn’t matter that she was female and deaf in her minds eye, all that mattered was doing what the Lord would want her to do. The only thing she worried about was whether her congregation would be able to understand her. She would have to work twice as hard in her speech therapy.
