We Did It

Our Management was determined to take off few inches from our waistline. We were encouraged to use the small field in front our our office to play cricket. But the very first season itself was a disaster. We played 19 matches with teams from other organizations and lost 18 consecutive matches though 19th one was a victory. We were not ashamed. We were determined to make the next season a better one. We put on our best effort into our fielding ability. This was the one area which needed less talent but more hard work. The next season ended with 19 wins from 20 matches and one being a tie. This success spurred us to enter the first corporate cricket tournament in our city. Most of the teams had cricketers who were appointed only on the basis of their success in inter state level. But none of us had ever gone beyond local club arena.  We sailed through many close encounters to reach the final. The opposition had defeated us in the preliminary league match. They were happy find us in the finals. The cream of our top Management was there to cheer us up. We batted first and were bundled our for only 143 runs in 40 overs. The opposition went on a hitting spree. They were 66 for no loss in just ten overs. We gathered around in the drinks break. We decided to fight.

It started happening from 12th over onwards. We held on to 4 most difficult catches. The ball was not allowed to travel beyond the boundary line. Couple of run outs came in our way. We were unaware of the excitement in the gallery. The final wicket fell in the final over with 3 balls to go. We realized that we have won, only after the umpires signaled the close of the game and suddenly we found ourselves surrounded our thrilled top executives. (c)
